SPPU degree certificates will have students’ photographs

PUNE: From the next convocation ceremony, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) degree certificate will have the student’s photograph on it, announced Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar at the 115th Convocation Ceremony of SPPU on Friday.

Karmalkar’s announcement follows a proposal made by former Human Resource Development minister Prakash Javadekar. “Degree certificates with photographs will make them tamperproof,” he said.

He also announced the reports on achievements, plans and programmes in presence of the chief guest, Country Director of French Institute in India, Bertrand De Hartingh, Registrar Prafulla Pawar, Controller of Examination and Evaluation Ashok Chavan, members of Academic and Management Councils as well as Senate members among other staffers of the university and the students.

Congratulating the graduates, Hartingh told them to not stick to only one language. “Learn a variety of languages. Don’t think if you know English, then it’s enough. Language connects to people. Knowing various languages will help one stay connected with people across the country and globe,” said Hartingh, who is also a counsellor for education, science and culture at the Embassy of France in India.

He said India is a large nation of cultures and has the ability to create cultural engineers. “We need to build the connection between culture and technology by trying to apply technology on culture and vice versa,” said Hartingh. He added, “Technological progress and social innovation go hand in hand. That is why the humanities, social sciences and economics play an important role in addressing the grand social challenges by providing sound recommendations to policymakers, business and society.”

As many as 6,212 students who graduated before and during the academic year 2017-18 were given their degree certificates at this event. Among these six students received gold medals inclusive of MTech and PhD graduates.
