PUNE: In order to improve maternal and child health by promoting the importance of nutritional diet for pregnant women and lactating mothers, the Government of India has announced December 2 to 8, as a special week for effective implementation of ‘Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana’ (PMMVY).
In India, the majority of pregnant women - both below poverty line (BPL) and above poverty line (APL) - continue to work right up to the last days of their pregnancy. Furthermore, they resume their work soon after childbirth even though they are physically incapable of working. The health of children born to such undernourished pregnant women and lactating mothers, maternal mortality ratio and neonatal mortality rate are adversely affected.
Since January 1, 2017, the implementation of the scheme was started in Maharashtra. The scheme is centrally sponsored with a budget share of 60 per cent by the central government and 40 per cent by the state government. Dr Archana Patil, Director, Health Services, Pune, on behalf of the Government of Maharashtra has appealed to all eligible beneficiaries to avail benefits under this scheme by providing all necessary documents to ASHAs/ ANM/ Anganwadi workers in her area.
