Pune: Poornam Ecovision Foundation, in collaboration with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), conducted a programme on ‘Composting and Rainwater Harvesting’ recently, where members of 80 housing societies from Ward No 34 Hingane Khurd on Sancheti Hospital Road participated. They received detailed information about it from the volunteers of the foundation and officials of PMC.
A special guidance centre has been opened where the societies can get guidance on rainwater harvesting and composting. The housing societies, who are already running these projects, can also come to seek guidance from 10 am to 12 pm every Sunday.
According to a survey conducted by the foundation, about 70 per cent of the existing composting projects at societies in Ward no 34 are not functioning.
In a power point presentation, Vishwesh Pawnaskar, volunteer of the foundation, explained various ways of composting at small, medium and big housing societies. He illustrated the general problems with existing composting plants, and necessary precautions to be taken to run a plant successfully.
Along with it, Ajay Dandekar, a volunteer of the foundation, explained rainwater harvesting, illustrating present overall rainwater condition in Pune, and also showed examples of societies, which are running rainwater harvesting projects, with photos.
Shreemal, Chief Sanitary Inspector, explained PMC’s role in solid waste management and gave information about subsidies for societies on building composting projects.
