Some BRTS corridors now open for all vehicles

PUNE: Some Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor will now be open for all vehicles. Pune Police Commissioner (CP) Dr K Venkatesham said that people can use the BRTS route to avoid traffic congestion.

He was replying in a tweet on Thursday.

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has clarified that not all corridors will be open and only those corridors where the metro work is going on, have been opened.

The step has been taken as the road width has reduced due to Metro construction work.

The police have also put up boards telling people they can use the BRTS lane.

In mid-June 2019, to manage traffic congestion in the city, owing to the metro work, district officials, police and PMC decided to open some BRTS lanes in the city for all vehicles. BRTS system covers approximately 100 km of roads in both Pune as well as Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations’ jurisdictions.

PMPML Joint Managing Director Ajay Charthankar said, “The transport utility did not get any information from the police regarding the opening of the Sangamwadi corridor. As of now, the corridor has not been opened for all traffic. With the metro work going on, some corridors have been opened for traffic.”

Earlier this month, the official had said the committee formed to improve the condition of the BRTS corridors has been revived and a decision was taken to install boom barriers along the Sangamwadi corridor to stop other vehicles’ entry.

One of the residents of Dhankawadi and commuter Girish Kamble said, “The civic body has done a good job by giving access to commuters to the BRTS corridor. Now, traffic congestion has come down. People can easily and freely drive their vehicle in BRTS. It is saving time and hassle free drive.”

A resident from Nagar Road area, G Siddharth said, “Very few people knew about BRTS free for other than PMPML buses. Most people are not using the BRTS route. Therefore, the picture has not changed. There is still heavy traffic adjacent to BRTS lane and BRTS lane is empty.’’

When contacted, DCP (traffic branch) Pankaj Deshmukh said, “The BRTS corridor on Solapur road and Satara roads were already being used by people. We had also jointly surveyed Satara road. The private vehicles on the BRTS corridors have been allowed for optimum utilisation of road width.”
