SGH celebrates World Mental Health Week

Pune: The Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) celebrated World Mental Health Week by organising various events and panel discussions. The events were organised by the Department of Psychiatry, BJ Government Medical College (BJGMC) and Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health.

A panel discussion on the year’s theme, ‘Young people and mental health in changing world’ was arranged on Thursday.

The panelists were personalities from varied fields, which included neurologist Dr Rajas Deshpande, movie and theatre actor Alok Rajwade as well as Madhavi Jadhav and Divya Shah, Founders of ‘ThatMate’, which spreads sexual awareness among adolescents.

The event was guided by Deputy Dean of BJGMS Dr Arun Kowale. The discussion focused on the daily constellation of burning mental health issues faced by the young people like Internet addiction, stress at workplace, academic and relationship issues, stigma of mental illness, peer pressure, substance abuse and positive mental health.

Each panelist elaborated on appropriate coping mechanisms and the need for seeking timely help, not only from the mental health professionals but also to open up to the nearest family members and acquaintances first to deal with them.

The icing on the cake was the words of wisdom from the veteran actor and senior psychiatrist Dr Mohan Agashe, who reached out to the hearts of the audience and interacted freely with them regarding various perspectives of promotion of positive mental health.

In the end, prizes were distributed by the panellists to the winners of various mental health related competitions that were arranged during the week.
