Set up a panel on natural stream: NGT directs PMC

PUNE: The Western Zone Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday to set up a three-member committee to respond to allegations by residents of Model Colony about the concrete road constructed on a natural stream.

The plea filed by the Model Colony residents on February 15 states that the PMC has constructed a road by dumping debris on a natural stream. The raised road constructed with elevated height of 2 metres causes flooding in the area during monsoon every year.

A petitioner, Devraj Bhatia, said, “The road constructed on the natural stream has caused a flood-like situation during monsoon every year. Also the stream is filled with debris.”

Saurabh Kulkarni, lawyer of the petitioner, said, “This is a major cause of concern for local residents as it obstructs the flow of water in the area, due to which water enters into nearby society.”

The NGT has directed that the three-member committee should comprise the district collector, assistant commissioner of Encroachment Department in PMC and a member of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board.
