Scientist from Pune University appointed at European Virus Bioinformatics Centre

Pune: Dr Urmila Kulkarni Kale, Information Scientist, Bioinformatics Centre, Savitribai Phule Pune University has been inducted as a member of the European Virus Bioinformatics Centre (EVBC). EVBC’s select membership is prestigious and currently hosts 178 members from 100 research organisations distributed over 30 countries across Europe and the world.

EVBC brings excellence in virology and bioinformatics together to answer big questions related to virus evolution, spread, emergence and re-emergence as well as to find solutions to diseases caused by viruses. Members of EVBC come from different sectors, domains, disciplines and background and are invited to envision scientific outcomes of the organisation.

It is a matter of great pride for the Savitribai Phule Pune University as well as for the Bioinformatics Centre which is the Centre of Excellence in virus bioinformatics and is funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. This recognition shall open up several new opportunities for collaborations with global experts and changemakers across academia and industry as well as generating funding for new research initiatives.

Dr Urmila Kulkarni-Kale has significantly contributed to bioinformatics, computational virology and immune informatics by developing novel methods. Over the years, she has built a strong research program with virologists, data scientists and statisticians in India and various parts of the world. She has also been instrumental in setting up new partnerships and collaborations with national and international universities and institutions. Dr Urmila is a renowned educator and apart from spearheading doctoral and educational programs, she is recognised speaker at various conferences, meetings and events.
