Samsung launches Onyx LED cinema screen

Mumbai: Samsung has introduced ‘Onyx’, an LED display to watch cinema. Onyx is a DCI-compliant LED display. Inox at Malad, Inorbit Mall will play host to Mumbai’s first Cinema LED Theatre.

Inspired by the gemstone of the same name, the brand alludes to the display’s ability to showcase cinematic content. This LED technology will replace projection in the cinema hall. To watch the movie, a portable hard drive or laptop can be attached to the screen. The inauguration of this technology took place on December 5 at Inox Malad, Inorbit Mall in presence of Puneet Sethi, Vice President, Consumer Electronics Enterprise Business, Samsung India and Alok Tandon, Chief Executive Officer, Inox Leisure Limited.

Sethi said, “This technology will change the way we watch movies and will mark a new chapter in the history of cinema. With Inox Onyx, true colours bring alive the LED Screen with real life like picture quality and exhilarating sound.”

“The cost of installing the technology ranges between Rs 8.5 to 9.5 crore per screen. This means that the average ticket price at halls with these screens will range from Rs100 to Rs150 or more. The Onyx accommodates configuration for any venue. The screen also offers Onyx surround sound experience from JBL by Harman International and Samsung’s Audio Lab,” Sethi said.

He explained that this integration eliminates rearward bias by expanding the audio ‘sweet spot’, while ensuring that all attendees can enjoy the same experience regardless of seat location, within the theatre. “The display delivers improved uniformity, free of optical distortion and interference. It is industry’s first DCI-certified cinema display available in variations extending between 5, 10 and 14 metres in width,” Sethi added.
