Rotary Club, SWaCH collect nirmalya from Manache Ganpati

Pune: Rotary Club and SWaCH are working together to collect nirmalya (flowers, leaves and garlands removed from Ganesh idols) from the five Manache Ganpati, and then compost it.

While the Rotary Club initiated the campaign and is collecting the nirmalya from the mandals, SWaCH has the responsibility of composting this wet waste.

The activity has been carried out for all Manache Ganapati, which are Kasba Ganpati, Tambdi Jogeshwari, Guruji Talim, Tulshibaug and Kesariwada, right from Day 1 of Ganesh festival.

Speaking about the initiative, Priya Katuria of SWaCH said, “Rotary Club initially approached us for composting the nirmalya that they would collect. Rotary Clubs of Sinhagad Road, Parvati, NIBM and Rotary Yuva are involved in this campaign. We are working on a daily basis and till Monday evening, that is at the end of four days of the festival, we collected and composted more than a ton of nirmalya. The composting is being done at PL Deshpande Garden off Sinhagad Road.”

The initiative was inaugurated on the first day, by Suresh Jagtap, Joint Commissioner, Solid Waste Management, PMC.
