Research student hurt in SPPU lab

Pune: Post-doctoral research student Mahavir Naikwade sustained minor injuries on his face and chest while conducting an experiment at the Department of Chemistry laboratory at Savitribai Phule Pune University on Monday afternoon.

Naikwade was admitted to AIMS, Aundh for treatment. While talking to Sakal Times, Professor Dilip Dhavale said, “Mahavir is a post-doctoral research student at the department. He was conducting the vacuum drying experiment when suddenly the glass containing the chemicals broke due to heat and the glass pieces pierced his face and chest.”

The injuries are minor but there was lot of blood loss and thus doctors kept him under observation. Meanwhile, University Health Centre Chief Dr Shashikant Doodhgaonkar said, “Mahavir received injuries because of the glass piercing his face. The wounds are not deep. Doctors at AIMS are doing the assessment and the reports are awaited.”

Dhavale said, “He was conducting the vacuum drying experiment when suddenly the glass containing the chemicals broke due to heat. ”
