Rains cause traffic jams and waterlogging in city

PUNE: After a sunny start, there was heavy downpour in the city on Thursday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune on Thursday recorded 71.4 millimetre (mm) and Lohegaon reported 4 mm rainfall. However, due to continuous rainfall in the city, traffic congestion and waterlogging were observed at busy roads on Thursday. 

According to the traffic police, there are about 62 vulnerable chowks (squares) in the city which can have waterlogging issues. 

On Thursday, areas like Kothrud, Koregaon Park, Cantonment areas, Warje, Sinhagad Road, Swargate, Shivajinagar, Dattawadi, Viman Nagar and other areas faced problems.

Though Puneites enjoyed the rain, they also had to face traffic jams at major junctions due to the rainfall. 

According to the traffic police, Shivajinagar, Fergusson College Road, Sinhagad Road, Maldhakka Chowk, Swargate Chowk, Narpat Giri Chowk, RTO and other roads witnessed traffic congestion due to rains.

According to the Fire Department, about six incidents of tree felling were reported in the city on Thursday. Tree felling was reported at District Collectorate, Employment Exchange Office in Rasta Peth, Khilarewadi in Erandwane, Ramnagar in Yerawada, Kasba Peth, Patwardhan Baug at Erandwane and Ghole Road Ward Office. 

FORECAST FOR PUNE AND STATE
IMD has further forecast that till July 2, the afternoons may be accompanied by rainfall in the city. 

The day temperature in the city is forecast to be around 34 degrees Celsius and the night temperature will be around 25 degreess Celsius.   

For the State, IMD has forecast Konkan and Goa will continue to experience rainfall till June 30. Whereas, till June 27, isolated places in Vidarbha to experience rainfall followed by a thunderstorm. 

FORECAST FOR THE NATION
IMD, in an official statement, mentioned that the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) continues to pass through Veraval, Surat, Indore, Mandla, Pendra, Sultanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri and Mukteshwar.

IMD has predicted that a low-pressure area is very likely to form over north Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood around June 30, which is likely to become more marked subsequently. In association with this, conditions are likely to become favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into remaining parts of central India and some more parts of the west and northwest India between July 1 to July 3. 

IMD has predicted heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha, Konkan and Goa, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Karnataka, Telangana and Kerala and Mahe till July 1. Heavy rainfall has been forecast at isolated places over south interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, East Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal during the same time.
