PUNE: With no rainfall this week, regions with rainfall deficiency have increased in the State since July 15. Now, 21 districts across the State have deficient rainfall as on Thursday. By July 15, the number of districts with deficient rainfall was 18.
Marathwada and Vidarbha have rainfall deficiency of 37 and 38 per cent respectively, while the rest of the State has a deficiency of 8 per cent (362.6 millimetre rainfall), which was two per cent at the start of this week.
This data was provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Konkan and Goa experienced 16 per cent excess rainfall between June 1 to July 18 with a total of 1,512millimetre rainfall.
Only a few parts of central Maharashtra have six per cent excess rainfall.
Though this falls under the bracket of normal rainfall, two more districts, Dhule and Jalgaon now fall under deficient rainfall districts since there has been no rainfall in last four days.
As per IMD data, with no rainfall in Pune this week, the excess rainfall in the city till Thursday has reduced from 73 to 62 per cent in just four days.
The situation has further deteriorated in Marathwada with seven out of eight districts facing deficiency. Only Aurangabad has normal rainfall. In Vidarbha out of 11, 10 districts have had less rainfall, with normal rainfall in only in Buldhana.
Monsoon activity
Speaking to Sakal Times about the weak monsoon current, DS Pai, Head of Climate Research and Services, India Meteorological Department, Pune, said that the monsoon may gear up in the coming two to three days.
“The monsoon current has been active over Konkan and Goa and eastern parts of central India like Orissa and Chhattisgarh. It will soon be active over Maharashtra as well,” Pai said.
AK Srivastava, Head of Climate Research Division at IMD Pune also shared similar views.
“By July 22, the picture will be clear. We are expecting that the southwest monsoon gets stronger. For further predictions, we will have to wait for at least three days,” said Srivasatava.
