Puneites having less sleep: Study

PUNE: A survey on sleep patterns titled ‘In Search of Better Sleep 2020’, by Centuary Mattresses has revealed that sleeplessness among Puneites has increased to 14 per cent in 2019, compared to 12 per cent in 2018.

The survey was carried out in 10 cities including Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar, Indore, Vishakhapatnam and Raipur.

The survey also revealed that close to 65 per cent of Puneites are sleeping very late due to the excessive usage of gadgets in the night. While about 9 per cent of people are using laptops in bed, more than 35 per cent watch movies/entertainment shows on their smartphones every night.

Interestingly, 21 per cent of Puneites are also delaying their sleep to browse social media feeds while in the bed.

As per the survey, Puneites average per day sleep has drastically gone down in 2019. They sleep 6.04 hours on weekends and 6.14 hours on weekdays, as compared to 7.58 hours and 7.46 hours respectively in 2018.

Similarly, after waking up in the morning, 35 per cent of Puneites don’t feel that they got enough rest and 23 per cent Puneites feel that the smartphones and laptops are delaying their sleeping hours.

Announcing the details of the survey, Executive Director – Centuary Mattresses, Uttam Malani, said, “This data suggests that while people are waking up to the reality that sleep is fundamentally important, for most people, achieving quality sleep is still out of reach. Various factors are depriving the people of the quality and duration of their sleep.”
