Puneites gear up for Yoga Day

Pune: The city-based yoga lovers and yoga institutes will perform different asanas on the occasion of International Yoga Day to be celebrated on Friday.

Considering the rising pollution, global warming and its consequences on the world, this year’s International Yoga Day theme is ‘climate action’ as decided by the United Nations (UN).

Secretary of Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute Pandurang Rao (65), who has been working as a professional yoga teacher since last 40 years, said that the essence of yoga is not only to work on the physical health but it also releases stress and gives mental as well as spiritual peace.

A few yoga teachers will also visit government offices to teach yoga.

The Institute of Yoga in Erandwane will celebrate Yoga Day on June 23. Vishwas Shende (47), Founder and Chairman of the Institute of Yoga, said, “We are going to celebrate Yoga Day at New English School, Tilak Road between 7 am and 8.30 am on June 23. We will teach yoga protocols to people with special focus on diabetic people and corporates.”

He further added that the session will include meditation, pranayama, various asanas and chanting of mantras which will be conducted by Vridula Shende, Principal Director of the Institute and also a yoga teacher.

Dr Vinita Ketkar (62), a practising doctor for 32 years will also be celebrating Yoga Day at her Gnosis Medical Yoga and Unnati Yoga Therapy training centres in the presence of chief guest Dr Rasik Shetiya between 9 am and 11.30 am. “If yoga is done properly in today’s era, we can definitely prevent diseases and disorders. In some cases even offer palliative care and restoring care. It is an important tool in the world of therapy,” she added.

Sachin Dhotre (40), a yoga teacher who conducts sessions at his Shrikrishna Yog Sanstha, said, “Yoga is important for mental, spiritual and physical strength. Regular practice can strengthen mental health and reduce suicide cases. He further said that yoga is better than the gym as it does not just focus on physical fitness but also benefits spiritual and mental health.

President of Maharashtra Cosmopolitan Education Society PA Inamdar mentioned that more than 2,000 students will participate in the yoga session to be held on campus.
