Pune University appoints 9 colleges in Pune, Nasik, Ahmednagar to counsel students

Pune: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has appointed nine of its affiliated colleges in Pune, Nashik and Ahmednagar to establish guidance and counselling centres for students.

These centres started functioning from Tuesday morning, as told by the university officials. On Friday, Maharashtra education minister Uday Samant, in a series of announcements regarding examinations, had also instructed universities to set-up guidance and counselling cells at each district to address concerns and queries of parents and students.

Following this, the university has facilitated nine centres for students, four in Pune district, two in Nashik and three in Ahmednagar. They have provided phone numbers and email addresses where students can contact for queries and information.

WHEN SAKAL TIMES TRIED TO CONTACT...
However, when Sakal Times tried to contact the numbers given in the official list, some were switched off while some were not reachable. One of the numbers from Pune-based college responded stating that ‘I am currently unavailable for calls, please put your query via email.’

The university officials stated that all the numbers are functional and have been flooded with hundreds of calls. Many among them have attended about 500 calls in the first half of the day itself.

Among those which could be contacted was Arts, Science and Commerce College, Indapur. College Principal Sanjay Chakane stated that within the first few hours in the morning, they have received hundreds of queries from students -- especially in concern with backlogs.

“We are a total of six of us working in this counselling centre. Me, the chief examination officer and non-teaching staff members have been attending the calls. We had also received 20-25 emails from students in the morning. Most of the questions were about backlogs-- what will be the procedure for them. Also, they were concern about the examination -- when will it be held etc.,” said Chakane.

“We have explained to them that as soon as the university comes out with the format of examination all the students will be notified well in advance. They will get a chance to prepare for the exam,” he said.

Nashik’s KTHM College’s counselling centre received about 75 calls till afternoon, stated professor MP Shinde. Professor Rajendra Kallapure of Dr Vikhe Patil Engineering College, Ahmednagar said that around 200 students had called at their centre in the day.

Both the professors stated the same, that the maximum queries were about backlogs. The students asked if they have a backlog in any subject from the first year, will they be promoted to the third year and when will the exams for backlog students be held.
