Pune ranks 6th in cyber crime cases in 2016

Pune: With over 269 cyber crime cases lodged in 2016, Pune city stood sixth out of the 19 cities in India with a population of over 20 lakh. The data was shared by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) after the release of crime statistics by the bureau on Thursday.

Although the number of cyber crime cases lodged in 2016 is quite less compared to the number of complaints related to cyber crime, which crossed more than 1,300 in the city. Officials of the Cyber Crime Cell of the city police said that not many complainants pursue the case and, hence, the number of FIRs lodged in such cases remain less. However, the actual cases of cyber frauds are more as many victims are unaware that they have been scammed and some victims do not lodge complaints. In 2017, the Cyber Crime Cell (CCC) received over 3,200 complaints till date, again highlighting the rise in the number of such complaints. Officials of CCC said that card related frauds, loan frauds, matrimonial scams and job frauds continue to dominate the list of crimes. “Cyber fraudsters are using mobile wallets for scamming people, which is a new trend emerging in 2016 and 2017,” an official from CCC said.

Another official from CCC added that the accused involved in scamming people from Maharashtra are from Jharkhand, Delhi and Bengaluru.
“We have observed that card frauds are operated from Jharkhand while loan and matrimonial frauds from Delhi. Accused in cases of card cloning and Nigerian frauds are mainly from the southern part of India,” added the official.

As per the NCRB report, in most of the cases, the agenda of the fraudster was to acquire illegal gain, taking revenge and insulting women online. Over 95 persons including four women were arrested in 2016 in cybercrime cases. Advocate Gaurav Jachak who looks after cases related to cyber crime cases said that in large number of cases, people are cheated of amounts less than Rs  5,000, and so victims hesitate to file complaints. “There is a need to raise awareness among people. Such victims are blamed for sharing their passwords with the banks when they approach them with their problem,” added Jachak.
