Pune Railway division issues QR code-enabled ID cards to TTEs

PUNE: Pune Railway Division has now issued a QR code-enabled identity cards to its ticket checking staff i.e. travelling ticket examiners (TTEs). The decision has come after an increasing number of cases involving miscreants looting train passengers by posing as TTEs.

“Some of these imposters had forged ID cards that resembled those issued by the railway administration to its bona fide TTEs. We have now decided to deal with this issue by issuing new QR code containing ID cards to our ticket checking staffers. Besides them, porters at the railway stations will also be issued similar ID cards. Any passenger can use the mobile applications that read the QR codes to determine the genuineness of the ID-card holders,” said Pune Railway Division spokesperson Manoj Jhawar.

In the past few months, the Railways received several complaints from passengers of suspicious-looking TTEs, who entered coaches and checked tickets of passengers. Railways security personnel had nabbed imposters, who posed as TTEs to extort money from ticketless travellers. Apart from fake TTEs, the Railways authorities also found people, who impersonate security personnel to travel without having to pay for a ticket.

As per railway officials, in the last few months, they caught four persons, who were posing as policeman and also had forged ID cards to travel without buying a ticket. Officials said the Central Railway has intensified its drive to curb the menace of ticketless travel and has intensified the campaign against ticketless and irregular travel.
