Pune: PMC to redraw containment zones on Monday

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will redraw the coronavirus induced containment zone map on Monday.

Pune Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad said, “The new areas will be re-drawn on Monday. The new areas which have reported a surge in the COVID-19 cases will be included whereas the areas where the case count is low will be given some relaxations. Also, the businesses will be allowed if the area is out of danger with respect to the spread of the infection”.

“Though the number of coronavirus cases is rising in the city especially from outside the containment zone, the situation is under control and the administration is ready to battle in every possible situation,” he added.

As per the instructions from the central government, once the containment zone is declared, the local authorities cannot make changes in it for 14 days. The containment zone announcement’s cycle will be ready on Monday.

As many as 60 areas in the city such as Bhavani Peth, Nana Peth, Ganesh Peth and more comprises of many wholesale businesses of electronics, automobile, timber jewellery and more. Due to the area declared as containment zones, these businesses have been hit badly.

Fattechand Ranka, President, Pune Trade Association talking to Sakal Times said, “We have cooperated with the government and the civic body from the beginning. If the administration keeps business areas under restriction zones in the redrawing of the containment map, it would be problematic for all to traders to sustain.”

“All the businesses have been hit badly. Many small traders have been affected as their shops are closed for over two months,” he added.  The traders’ body have demanded reopening of trades and guaranteed to follow all the norms and guideline related to COVID-19 spread.

Meanwhile, Pune city on Saturday reported 282 new COVID-cases with number jumping over 11,000 in Pune district.
