Pune: PMC procures 50 Tocilizumab injections to battle COVID-19

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has procured 50 Tocilizumab injections as they were found to be effective in treating COVID-19 patients with serious conditions. These medicines will help in bringing down the fatality rate in COVID-19 cases in the city.

PMC has constituted a task force of doctors to formulate strategy and clinical management protocols. These doctor members have recorded certain observations of the effect of medicines on corona-virus infected patients with several conditions including those with comorbidity. The task force has observed that patients with certain serious conditions have recovered from Covid-19 after they were administered doses of Tocilizumab injection.

Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said, "Serious patients recovering from the disease will definitely bring down the fatality rate in the city. Besides other measures taken to curb the spread of coronavirus. PMC is providing Sassoon hospital with the Tocilizumab injections. The recovery rate of patients in Pune is around 66 per cent which is satisfactory, but we want to reduce the fatality rate further."

"Tocilizumab injection has been quite effective for treatment on COVID-positive patients with serious conditions. We will ensure that enough funds will be available for procuring this medicine,” he added.

Tocilizumab, which is also called as atlizumab, is an immunosuppressive drug, principally for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
