Pune: Out on parole, man indulges in robberies to meet liquor and other essential expenses

Police have identified the suspects as Vyankatesh Datta Tagare (35), a resident of Khadki and Sunny Satish Gaikwad (27) a resident of Mundhwa. Police have seized a two-wheeler and seven mobile handsets from the suspects. 

Pune: Yerawada police has arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with a robbery incident that took place at Kalyani Nagar during the lockdown in the city. The arrested suspect was released on parole from the Yerawada jail just before the lockdown and has 55 robbery cases registered against him in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad police commissionerate jurisdiction. Investigations revealed that he had indulged in the crimes during lockdown to manage his essential and liquor needs as he had no other source of income.

Police have identified the suspects as Vyankatesh Datta Tagare (35), a resident of Khadki and Sunny Satish Gaikwad (27) a resident of Mundhwa. Police have seized a two-wheeler and seven mobile handsets from the suspects. These mobile handsets were stolen from Bundgarden andAkurdi railway station areas. The bike was stolen from the Dehu Road area a month before and the suspects used it for committing offences in the city.

Police Constable Sachin Dhavale received a tipoff that Tagare was involved in a robbery case that took place in Kalyani Nagar during the lockdown. The victim, in this case, was a ward boy who works in a hospital in the same area. The victim was walking down a footpath on August 1 morning 8.30 am, when the suspects approached him and offered him a lift till Wadgaon Sheri. The duo later stopped their bike, threatened the ward boy with a sharp weapon and stole cash and his mobile phone. The victim was frightened and due to lockdown restrictions approached the police a few days later.

Tagare was released on parole on March 23 by the Yerawada jail administration. He had borrowed money from his friends initially but later started committing offences like vehicle and mobile theft and robberies to meet his essential needs and liquor expenses. Sunny Gaikwad also has a case registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Police Inspector Anjum Bagwan, Assistant Police Inspector Bhalchandra Dhavale, Police Sub-Inspector Vijay Zanzad, Police Constables Sachin Dhavale, Ramesh Rathod, Abdul Sayyad, Ganesh Salunkhe, Sagar Ghorpade, Ganesh Kale, Surendra Sabale, Vishal Shirke, Bhalchandra Borkar, Suhas Kadam, Nilesh Shivtare and Ashok Shelar laid the trap and nabbed the suspects in Khadki area.
