Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has tested 1,439 employees of traders in the city of which only 37 (2.57 per cent) have tested positive for COVID-19.

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has tested 1,439 employees of traders in the city of which only 37 (2.57 per cent) have tested positive for COVID-19. As a part of the new containment strategy, the civic body is aggressively testing the potential super-spreaders of the contagious virus in the city.

The Federation of Trade Associations of Pune (FATP) has organised this special drive in association with the PMC and district administration. A special antigen testing centre has been started in the Peth areas for the purpose. If these tests are not conducted in time then the super-spreaders won’t be identified in the early stage and as a result they would act as carriers of the coronavirus. Samples of shopkeepers in the city are being collected randomly on a daily basis.

A testing quota has been allotted to medical shop employees, vegetable and fruits vendors and street vendors to break the chain of coronavirus infections. Higher number of contact tracing, especially those in the high-risk contact group, gives more time to the patient and administration for taking precautionary measures and arranging for oxygenated and ventilator beds if required.

On the first day (July 29) of the drive, 250 shop owners and staff in Bhavani Peth areas were tested and only 4 had been found positive for COVID-19. All these four persons were asymptomatic. They were immediately transferred to the quarantine centre by the administration.

On July 30 and 31, the administration tested 346 and 350 staff and owners respectively. Of them, 23 were found positive for COVID-19. On August 1 and 2, a total of 298 and 195 staff and owners were tested for COVID-19 and 10 were identified to have contracted the infection.

FATP President Fattechand Ranka and Secretary Mahendra Pitaliya, in a statement, have said, “The results of the tests in the last five days have proved that traders from Pune that are members of FATP are taking best care of themselves and their staff members respectively. Not a single owner is found positive for COVID-19 so far.”
