Restaurant and Hotel owners have claimed that only 10 per cent customers are availing parcel service in the city

Pune: Restaurant and Hotel owners have claimed that only 10 per cent customers are availing parcel service in the city. "It is unaffordable for them to run business in this fashion and the state government should give us permission to re-open just like it has permitted lodges and guest houses," the hotel owners have demanded.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had indicated that hotels will be permitted to operate in the state from July 8. Some hotel owners had also started preparing for it, but they were disappointed when the government clarified that only lodges, guest houses and hotels with independent rooms will be allowed to restart operations for now.

Only 10 to 15 per cent of the hotel and restaurant owners have started take-away or parcel services at their outlets. But these restaurants and hotels are also not operating on profit since only 10 per cent of their regular customers are availing the parcel facility. Owners have demanded that the government should reopen all hotels and restaurants.

Ganesh Shetty, President of Pune Restaurant and Hotelliers Association said, "All establishments are following the norms laid down by the government while offering parcel services to the customers. Owners are still facing operational and workforce problems as most of the staff has gone to their native places. Since parcel services require limited manpower and with most of the hotels still closed, these workers are not ready to return."

Kiran Patil, a hotel business owner said, "My hotel is shut since the lockdown was declared and implemented. I have paid salaries to my staff till last month, but now it is not possible. The state government should frame a policy, issue guidelines for hotels and allow us to reopen at the earliest."

Ritesh Zanwar, a hotel employee said, "My employer started parcel service in the last 15 days. So we expect that at least our salary expenses will be recovered. Before this, the situation was bad. Now everything is returning to normal and citizens are taking enough precautions. The government should consider reopening restaurants and hotels too."
