Pune: Olympians to meet at Deccan Gymkhana Club on Thursday

Pune: Deccan Gymkhana Club and Pune District Athletics Association (PDAA) has organised the centenary year celebration of India's participation in the Olympics. City's Olympians will gather at the Deccan Gymkhana Club on Thursday (August 13) at 4 pm for this programme.

Adille Sumariwala (Moscow Olympics, 1980), Anjali Bhagwat (Sydney Olympics, 2000), Rekha Bhide-Mundphan (Moscow Olympics, 1980), Manoj Pingle (Seoul Olympics, 1988), Nikhil Kanetkar (Athens Olympics, 2004) and Balkrishna Akotkar (Tokyo Olympics, 1964) will be felicitated during the event.

Ajit Lakra (Barcelona Olympics, 1992), Vikram Pillay (Athens Olympics, 2004) and Lalita Babar (Rio Olympics, 2016) have also been invited for the event. The event is being jointly organised by Deccan Gymkhana Club and the Pune District Athletics Association. The Indian Olympics Association met at Deccan Gymkhana, about a hundred years ago, to finalise and field the first Indian team at the Antwerp Olympics in 1920.

Vishwas Lokare, Secretary of Deccan Gymkhana Club and Abhay Chajed, President of the Pune District Athletics Association said, "It is planned to have more such events to mark the centenary of India's participation."
