Pimpri: A Block Development Officer (BDO) who came to inspect the COVID centre in Pune was allegedly manhandled and abused by COVID-19 patient. In this regard, the BDO's government driver, Shivaji Pandurang Patil (55), a resident of Chaudhary Park, Dighi lodged a complaint at Talegaon Dabhade Police Station.
The incident took place on Monday at Somatane Gram Panchayat office. The assailant suspect (35) and his mother (62) are positive patients for the infection and were staying at Somatane based centre for treatment.
Accordingly, the police registered a case against a 35-year-old man from Somatane for obstructing government work under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
According to senior police inspector Amarnath Waghmode talking to Sakal Times said, "COVID-19 patients are increasing in Somatane Gram Panchayat jurisdiction. Therefore, the Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Ayush Prasad has ordered officials to have review the situation. Accordingly, Maval's Block development officer Sudhir Bhagwat had visited to Somatane village on Monday to check the ground realities and to collect the reports."
"While inspecting the Gram Panchayat office, the suspect punched the BDO but driver Shivaji Pandurang Patil tried to protect him. The suspect who covered his face with a cloth started abusing and assaulting BDO. There was a time where both got physical where BDO Bhagwat came to solve the struggle, he was also beaten and abused," Waghmode informed
Meanwhile, the Block Development Officer Rajendra Waghmare, Clerk Jeevan Gaikwad, peon Kailas Tukaram Muha rushed to the spot. The suspect was then taken to the Gram Panchayat office. When questioned, he suspected that his mother who is also COVID-19 positive will not get treatment and a group will come to take her away for hospital and in that heat of anger he started abusing and manhandling them. Police Sub-Inspector Nilesh Bokefode is investigating the case.
