Pune now second highest organ donor city in State

PUNE: Pune witnessed the 50th organ donation by a brain dead patient making it second highest donor city in the State after Mumbai. Mumbai has seen 51 organ donations of brain dead patients so far this year and Pune has seen retrieval of organs from 50 brain dead patients this year.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Aarti Gokhale, Transplant Coordinator of Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) said that this week, Pune has seen five consecutive organ donations of brain dead patients.

“This week, at different hospitals in Pune region like Ruby Hall Clinic, Birla Hospital, Sahyadri Hospital and Yashodhara Hospital, we have retrieved organs of five brain dead patients. As the awareness about organ donation grows, more and more people will come forward for giving consent which will further save lives,” said Gokhale.

On Wednesday, a 24-year-old man was declared brain dead after he met with an accident and was hospitalised for three days. The consent was given by his parents. This patient was running a tea shop and has given life to four people by donating a heart, two kidneys and pancreas.

His heart was sent to Fortis Hospital in Mumbai with the help of a green corridor. It was transported by road at around 1.30 am and it reached Mumbai at around 3 am on Friday. Similarly, two kidneys and a pancreas were given to Sahyadri Hospital, which undertook its second kidney-pancreas transplant on Friday.
