Pune: Non-COVID patient dies of cardiac arrest after six private hospitals refuse admission

Pune: Even though the patient showed no signs of COVID-19 and his electrocardiogram (ECG) reports revealed that he had suffered a heart attack, yet six private hospitals refused to admit the patient leading to his death.

Despite the family being ready to pay for treatment, the patient scummed to his condition.

After losing a few crucial hours in the running pillar to post for a vacant bed, the patient was finally shifted to Sassoon General Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The deceased has been identified as Tanaji Namdev Dudhane (68), a resident of Wadgaon Sheri. His relatives have alleged that his death was caused due to the delay in his treatment by private hospitals who refused to even admit him fearing coronavirus infection.

According to relatives, Tanaji Dudhane was taken to a private hospital in Koregaon Park area at 3 am on July 4. His sugar test revealed that the levels had increased and he needed a ventilator, but the hospital said that there is no ICU bed available. He was then taken to another private hospital on Bund Garden Road, but they too refused him admission citing a shortage of beds. Later, another hospital in the same area, a hospital situated in Erandwane, Alka Talkies and Pimpri-Chinchwad too refused to admit Tanaji.

Anant Dudhane, brother of the deceased said, "My brother Tanaji did not even show any symptoms of COVID-19. He did not have a fever too. He could walk on his own. The ECG report showed that he had suffered a heart attack, but still the private hospitals did not admit him. We told them several times that Tanaji had no COVID symptoms but they refused to entertain us."

Ramesh Aiyyar, Social Activist and Congress party worker said, "Why are hospitals so adamant even when they could see a patient is serious and needs immediate attention. Where should non-COVID patients go if private hospitals in their nearby areas refuse to admit them? We will file a complaint against the private hospitals in Tanaji Dudhane's case."
