Pune Municipal Corporation to recruit 500 doctors to fight COVID-19

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to recruit around 500 doctors for a three-month contract period on a consolidated salary basis to fight against the coronavirus pandemic and to provide relief to the exhausted PMC doctors.

From over two months now, over 250 civic doctors have been providing uninterrupted service in the PMC hospitals to COVID-19 patients as a result they are now exhausted as they did not get a break or weekly off during this period. Also, PMC health department is understaffed. Therefore, the existing staff is working under pressure.

Speaking on the issue, Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad said, "As per the state government directives, we carried out the recruitment process. We will hire around 500 doctors, who have been scrutinised by the civic administration. We will give them a consolidated salary for three months. We will sign a three-month bond with these doctors. After three months, we will select 210 candidates as per the regular recruitment process and induct them in PMC’s service."

According to the PMC establishment department’s statistics, they received 1,017 applications for the 500 posts of the A and B categories of doctors.

The A category includes specialised doctors while B has non-MBBS doctors. For both categories, there are 210 regular posts, which will be filled later. Of the total applications received, PMC will employ 500 doctors for three months temporarily. PMC will pay a minimum of Rs 55,000 to Rs 70,000 per month based on their qualifications such as PG, MBBS and more.

PMC chief Medical officer Dr Ramchandra Hankare said, "Our medical staff is working hard and is under pressure for over two months now. The new recruits will help to ease their burden. We will be able to work better with the new doctors."

They will be asked to work in various areas of the city. Duties will be assigned in the containment zones as well as in the non-containment zones.

TESTING FACILITIES

PMC has also increased testing facilities with mobile vans and setting up centres in containment areas. Therefore, the number of detection of COVID-19 patients is increasing in the city, especially in the containment areas.

The civic administration has also set up flu clinics in different parts of the city. The newly recruited doctors will also extend their help in smooth functioning of these clinics.
