Pune Municipal Corporation implements ‘Baramati Pattern’ in containment areas

Pune: Following relaxations in the non-containment areas of the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started implementing the ‘Baramati Pattern’ in the containment areas. It has readied around 70,000 ration kits for free distribution to the families living in the hotspots.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Shekhar Gaikwad, Pune Municipal Commissioner said, "We decided to distribute the ration kits, along with masks and sanitisers, to the families living in hotspots, particularly in community areas. We distributed around 10,000 kits so far”.

He also said that the target is to distribute one lakh kits in the containment areas. We have covered the Patil Estate community areas. The purpose is that they should not come out to purchase grocery and stay at home. It is akin to the Baramati Pattern to control the spread of COVID-19.

“A ration kit contains five kg atta, three kg rice, pulses, edible oil, milk powder and other essential items, which will be enough for 15 days. PMC has allocated Rs 6 crore for the purpose,” he added.

With help from community workers and self-help groups and social workers, PMC has started distributing ration kits and masks. It has also placed hands-free washbasins outside community toilets, which are being cleaned thrice daily and photos of this activity are taken for record.

Gaikwad said, “We have closed all bylanes with tin sheets to restrict movements in the containment areas.”

“We have also awarded contracts of making masks to self-help groups, government rural mission self-help groups and Cotton King company at the rate of Rs 12 per piece,” Gaikwad concluded.

Meanwhile, PMC has over 2,140 COVID-19 cases till date and of these, over 1,600 are from Bhavani Peth, Dhole Patil Road, Kasba-Vishrambaug, parts of Shivajinagar and parts of Yerawada areas. Four IAS officers have been given independent charge of the six ward offices of these hotspots.

WHAT IS BARAMATI PATTERN

Baramati Pattern is based on Bhilwara Model of Rajasthan and involves complete sealing of hotspots, which have reported positive cases and preventing people from stepping out even to buy essentials. Baramati is now seeing negligible cases of COVID-19.

In this method, the members of the self-help groups help citizens with essential commodities and medical needs. The members also help in-home delivery of essentials and they keep a watch whether people are practising social distancing norms.

This team helps the administration in tracking high-risk and low-risk contact person so that such persons can be isolated and the suspected patients can be tested multiple times.
