Pune: The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) said that 40 per cent work on its two routes -- Vanaz to Ramwadi and Pimpri-Chinchwad to Swargate - has resumed with most the migrated labourers returning to the city after the lockdown restrictions were eased recently.

The MahaMetro had stopped the work after a countrywide lockdown was announced in March. In the first phase of unlocking, the central and state government had given several relaxations including permission to construction activities. So the MahaMetro decided to restart their operations. However, during this period the Shramik Special trains were started by the railway ministry and central government due to which around 1,200 migrant labourers decided to move back to the native place till lockdown is completely over. These workers were from West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and other states. Now, these labourers have started coming back to Pune for work.

About two days back, 200 labourers have returned to work. The MahaMetro has also sent special buses to Jharkhand to bring back some workers as they are unable to find means of transportation to return to Pune city. MahaMetro is expecting that by next week, about 350 to 400 workers will return to their site.

Hemant Sonawane, Public Relations Officer of MahaMetro said, "Presently we are working at 40 per cent capacity. The available workforce is being deployed to complete the work on the priority stretch of the metro."

These two priority stretches are 5.5 kilometres and 5 kilometres long each. The Pimpri, Phugewadi, Vanaz, Garware stations are being developed on priority.
