Pune: Criticising the decision of lockdown in the city, BJP MP Girish Bapat said, "Lockdown is not a panacea to COVID-19 and the government should introspect its unilateral style of decision-making as the precautionary measures to curb the disease spread have remained only on paper because of improper implementation."
Bapat said, "We have supported the government's decision earlier when it was necessary to implement and follow lockdown. But the recent lockdown was taken without consulting the other stakeholders and implemented without proper planning. That's why despite the lockdown the COVID-19 situation has come under control of the administration."
"The government should have helped the local administration to increase the hospital and healthcare facilities along with ensuring adequate supply of medicines and beds with ventilator and oxygen support. Presently, we are conducting a large number of tests daily and hence there is a spike in cases so people need not worry. But the government and administration should ensure that someday we will surpass this peak. That is not happening which is a cause of worry," Bapat said.
Bapat was addressing mediapersons after a delegation of BJP city unit under his leadership met District Collector Naval Kishor Ram on Monday. When asked what would be the BJP's stand if lockdown is extended further, Bapat said that the party will explain its stand at the right time and let the administration announce their decision first.
Bapat also appealed to citizens to not panic over the issue of ventilator and oxygen beds availability in the hospitals. Bapat said, "Sometimes the data uploaded to the dashboard is incorrect and we have asked the district administration to look into this matter. The Pune Municipal Corporation has got additional 40 to 50 ventilator beds from various private hospitals including Sancheti hospital, Jehangir Hospital and Dalvi hospital apart from the Sassoon General hospital. There are enough oxygen and ventilator beds across hospitals in the city and citizens should not worry about it. We will ensure that no patient suffers due to this issue of bed availability."
