Thousands of claims are pending in the revenue department from five months amid the coronavirus crisis in the city

Pune: Thousands of claims are pending in the revenue department from five months amid the coronavirus crisis in the city. At present currently, 2,918 cases are pending with the Additional District Collector of Pune. Due to this, the Divisional Commissioner has directed the Additional Collector to hold hearings from August 1.

Most government offices have been shut down since March 24 after the government announced a lockdown. Due to this, the hearing of revenue claims against the Additional Collector of Pune came to a standstill. At the taluka level, claims are filed with the Additional Collector against the decision given by the Tehsildar.

These are mainly related to the correction of errors in alterations, clan records, roads, disputes of common roads between the two fields, errors in 7 by 12 extracts and others. Farmers in rural areas, citizens, talathi, have been working for years to rectify the mistakes made by the officers.

In Pune district, the Additional Collector had started hearing of revenue cases online. But there were many technical difficulties. Most of the plaintiffs were from rural, remote areas, making it difficult to hold online hearings.

The number of claims filed and the number of pending claims in Pune district is huge.  Earlier prior to the outbreak, there were 100 to 120 cases where hearings proceeded on a daily bases. But now it is planned to hold an average of 30 hearings a day on the backdrop of the pandemic and maintain a safe social distance, said the Additional Collector Sudhir Joshi.

The post of Additional Collector has been vacant for three months. As a result, citizens are now demanding the government to appoint regular officers to the post as soon as possible.
