Pune: A 31-year-old, Pune-based astrologer woman was allegedly conned and duped by unidentified suspects, under the pretext of claiming her lottery ticket worth Rs 25 lakh. The woman paid a total of Rs 4.15 lakhs as taxes for the lottery.
The incident came to light after the woman lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with Kothrud police station on Monday against an unidentified person.
According to the police, “The incident took place between April 18 to May 12. The woman is an astrologer and lives in Kothrud area. A few days ago, she received a call from a person who identified himself as Sharma, the head of the SBI Marketing Department. He revealed to her over the phone that she has won a lottery of Rs 25 lakh for Kaun Banega Crorepati. He further claimed that if she wants those winning amounts of money, she has to pay the taxes first and will get such an amount in return.”
Adding that the woman was apprehensive of the call. The police said, “meanwhile, the woman had confessed that she never bought any lottery tickets, but the caller convinced her that the amount has come in her name which is into different bank accounts and the bank has asked him to deposit the amount in her account but for it, she has to pay such lottery winning taxes."
The police further explained that the woman had paid Rs 4.15 lakh in the span between April to May.
"Later, she started checking her bank account details and scrutinized them but such winning amounts were not credited in her account. Soon she realized that she had been cheated and conned. She even called on the number on which she was getting calls but those numbers were not reachable. Gaining no response from them and the bank too claimed that no such person had called her," said the inspector.
"After which she approached us and we registered the case. Our senior inspector attached to the crime branch is investigating the case," he added.
