Pune: Kharadi, Viman Nagar societies see steady rise in COVID-19 cases

Pune: Plush societies in Viman Nagar, Kharadi, Lohegaon and Wadgaon Sheri are witnessing a steady rise in the number of COVID-19 cases, while the densely populated slums in these areas have already peaked. About 1,224 total cases of COVID-19 have been reported from these areas with 23 deaths and 439 cases still active. There is oxygen beds shortage in hospitals in this area too.

In Viman Nagar, Rohan Mithila society reported 6 cases while Lunkad Angan, Gold Coast, Queensland Garden and Amazon Society reported one case each. These societies fall under Viman Nagar - Somnath Nagar Prabhag number 3. The total number of cases in this ward jurisdiction are 313. Out of these, 166 patients have recovered and 138 are still under treatment. Nine deaths have also been reported from this area. The Yerawada area, consisting of Gandhi Nagar and Jayprakash Nagar slums, reported 125 cases. Out of which, 105 patients have recovered and 14 cases are still active. Burma Shell colony so far has reported 14 cases while Yamunanagar and Samrat Chowk areas have 14 cases.

In Wadgaon Sheri Prabhag number 5, the total number of cases are 337,  out of which 100 patients have recovered. Six deaths have been reported while 231 patients are still under treatment. Sainikwadi, St Joseph Colony, Sainath Nagar, Police Colony, Ganesh Nagar, Aishwarya Residency and Wadgaon Sheri have been affected the most.

Kharadi area has seen the maximum number of cases of COVID-19 due to the vegetable market located in this area which is visited by residents from the entire Nagar road area. With a total of 329 cases reported, 136 patients have recovered, 248 are still under treatment and 8 patients have died so far. Somnath Mala (6), Chandannagar (6), Yashwant Nagar (6), Ganesh Nagar (12), Sangharsh Chowk (6), Borate Vasti (16), Bidi Kamgar Vasahat (7) localities have reported these cases.

The Wadgaon Sheri ward office of Pune Municipal Corporation has been taking necessary preventive and precautionary measures to curb the spread of coronavirus in Kharadi, Viman Nagar, Wadgaon Sheri and Lohegaon areas. Despite the densely populated slum areas getting affected, this ward office has managed to restrict the number of cases.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Bankar said, "We have increased the number of daily tests in this area. Recently, we have started a 3,200 isolation bed capacity COVID care centre in Viman Nagar. Citizens should immediately get tested for COVID-19 if they see any symptoms of the disease."
