Pune: IMD's new model can measure rainfall in any ward office jurisdiction of PMC

Pune: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has developed a new model - Real Time Data Acquisition System and Real-Time Design Support System - in which it can measure rainfall in 9 square kilometre area instead of earlier 81 square kilometre area. This means the IMD can actually measure rainfall in a particular ward office area of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The new model's measurement accuracy will help the irrigation department to plan the water storage in dams during the monsoon season and can prevent flooding in the riverbed-side areas in the city while discharging water from dams.

The IMD's new model can also give real-time information about the humidity level, wind speed and its direction. The irrigation department is the biggest beneficiary of this real-time data as it can actually measure how much water will flow in every 15 minutes into the dam and plan for dam storage levels on a real-time basis.

The IMD's new model can measure the rainfall in as less as 9 square kilometre areas for every 15 minutes. This will help the irrigation department to get real-time information about dam water levels. Thus, it can plan the water discharge levels, its timing and thereby prevent flooding of areas near the riverbed when the discharged water flows through the city. Citizens staying in this area can also be alerted in less time than usual.

Sanjay Heganna, Sub-Divisional Engineer at the Irrigation Department said, "The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), under the National Water Mission, has developed a 'Real Time Data Acquisition and Analysis' system which gives information about rain forecast and other environmental factors. The present system with the irrigation department will be modified and the IMD system will be integrated in a year's time."

ADVANTAGES OF NEW SYSTEM

  • Rainfall measurement in 9 square kilometre area is possible
  • Accurate forecasting of rainfall possible
  • Dam water management can be done during monsoon season
