Pune: How Grahak Peth store is helping customers choose local ‘Swadeshi’ products

Pune: Next time, when you step into the Grahak Peth store on Tilak road, it would be easier for you to choose local or indigenous products over the foreign company made ones. The Grahak Peth has displayed ‘swadeshi’ products separately to help customers select and promote local brands.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently appealed to all citizens to be ‘vocal for local’ products and services to make the country self-reliant (atmanirbhar). After this clarion call by the Prime Minister, several Indian companies have started highlighting their ‘desi origins’ to attract customers. Citizens have also responded positively to the atmanirbhar abhiyan and are preferring ‘swadeshi’ products.

Suryakant Pathak, Managing Director of Grahak Peth, said, “We decided to distinguish between Swadeshi and other products to help customers make an informed decision. The shelves and racks in our store have been labelled accordingly. For example, Vicco toothpaste has been put under a shelf labelled as Swadeshi and Colgate has been placed under the label of Videshi. We believe that customers will benefit from this move.”

Customers of Grahak Peth are also satisfied with this initiative. “We sometimes don’t know which company is Indian originally and which is foreign. If stores help us identify local company manufactured products, we would definitely purchase them,” said Upendra Ranade, a customer outside the store.

Another citizen Shivani Deshpande said, “Shop owners themselves don’t inform you about swadeshi or videshi company products. It is only when we insist on a local company product they hand us a swadeshi company product. This mindset of shop owners should also change. They should, on priority, give customers Indian company products only.”
