Pune: Ganesh Mandals, NGOs to help administration contain the spread of COVID-19

Pune: The district and civic administration have sought the help of various Ganesh Mandals and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) to combat and contain the spread of coronavirus in the city. Volunteers of mandals and NGO's along with Special Police Officers (SPO) will reach out to citizens for any help required during the lockdown and also create awareness about COVID-19.

This decision was taken in a meeting of representatives of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), all prominent Ganesh mandals and NGOs which was chaired by the Divisional Commissioner Dr Deepak Mhaisekar on Monday. Coordination officer Rajendra Nimbalkar, PMC Standing Committee Chairman Hemant Rasane, Leader of the House in PMC Dheeraj Ghate, Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Trust representative Mahesh Suryavanshi, Tuslhibaug Sarvajanik Ganpati Mandal's Vivek Khatavkar, Guruji Talim Mandal's Praveensinh Pardeshi, Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari Mandal's Puneet Balan, Kasba Ganpati Mandal's Shrikant Shete, Tambdi Jogeshwari Mandal's Prashant Tikar, Aadarsh Mitra Mandal's Uday Jagtap, Seva Mitra Mandal's Shirish Mohite, Swami Narayan Mandir's Dr Piyush Lathi were present during the meeting.

The district administration has appealed volunteers from mandals and NGOs to help officials in promoting safe and hygienic health practices like using masks, sanitisers, maintaining social distancing, monitoring citizens' movement for non-essential activities, convince maximum citizens to undergo antigen tests of COVID-19, cooperate in contact-tracing activities and monitor activities of patients who have been asked to stay at home in isolation or quarantine etc. The administration will soon publish a booklet in which the expectations from volunteers will be listed and these booklets will be distributed to all Ganesh mandals and NGOs.

Nimbalkar said, "The purpose of the meeting was to encourage public participation in the precautionary measures undertaken by the administration. We have sought help from volunteers to assist officials and health staff in making ambulances provided by the ward offices available to patients, admitting serious patients to nearby hospitals, maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in public toilets especially in slums."

Suryavanshi said, "All workers, activists associated with the Ganesh mandals are willing to help the administration in whatever way they need."

Rasne said, "The administration should make arrangements for citizens to see the bed availability dashboard in their area."
