Pune: Five Inmates escape from temporary prison in Yerawada

Pune: Five inmates escaped from the temporary building of Yerawada Central Prison in Pune on Thursday. The inmates escaped by tampering a window sill of the first floor of the building and ran away.

The Yerawada Prison authority has approached Yerawada police station and lodged a case in this regard against The suspects who are been identified as Devghan Ajinath Chavan, Ganesh Ajinath Chavan, Akshay Kondakya Chavan, Ajinkya Uttam Kamble and Sunny Tyrone Pinto. Most of them are residents of Daund.

Senior Inspector Yunus Shaikh of the Yerawada police station said, “The five inmates escaped by manhandling the grills of the window in room number 5. The prison authority has lodged the complaint in this regard. They were arrested in cases which were registered with the Daund and Lonikand police stations attached to the Pune rural police jurisdiction and one more from Wakad police station which comes under the Pimpri Chinchwad jurisdiction. A search has been launched."

Talking to Sakal Times, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Yogesh Desai admitted the escape of inmates and said, "Due to outbreak of coronavirus, a temporary jail has been built to segregate the inmates coming newly in the prison. These inmates are sent to the girl hostel building meant for underprivileged students which is now transformed into temporary jail premises. The new entries to prison are kept in such temporary jail premises to avoid the reach of a pandemic to other inmates. The patrolling and security duty is not deployed on our prison staff but it is Pune police staffs which are deployed to look into security aspects of such new temporary jail premises. We are probing and investigation report is still to come to me after which the picture will be clear."

Yerawada Jail Superintendent UT Pawar said, "They were sent to the temporary prison. These inmates were sent on the first and second floor of hostel premises. It seems that this entire gang forcefully managed to pull the grill as they might not be strong as our prison. They manage to pull it and escape from the first floor by jumping and later escaping through the road."
