Pune: Engineering students give SPPU's transcript certificate initiative a miss

Pune: Not a single engineering student from colleges affiliated with the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) have applied for transcript certificate - an important document for those who wish to apply to foreign universities - to be received along with the statement of marks from the university.

The new 'transcript certificate along with a statement of mark' facility was made available to the engineering and pharmacy students first. Accordingly, the students were asked while filling the online exam form whether they would like to receive the transcript certificate along with the statement of marks. About 2017 pharmacy students have applied for the transcript certificate, but none from the engineering branches did it.

The transcript certificate is required by students while taking admission for postgraduate courses in foreign universities after they receive their graduation results. The process for getting a transcript certificate is relatively simple but time-consuming. Usually, it takes 15 days, but sometimes it might take 60 days to six months. Due to this reason, some students had also approached the court to ask University management to issue transcripts in a time-bound manner. As a result, Dr Nitin Karmalkar, Vice-Chancellor of SPPU had appointed a three-member committee to find a solution to this problem.

The committee under the chairmanship of SPPU's management council member Prof Sanjay Chakane studied the problem and suggested that the transcript certificate should be given along with the statement of marks to students. The university had approved this suggestion and decided to implement it from the academic year 2019-20.

Earlier, students had to download and fill the Transcript application form from the university website. After attaching documents like a statement of marks etc send it by post to the exam certificate section of Pune University. For students who were later staying abroad, they had to pay extra international postal charges. Then the university would send the transcript certificate by post to the student within 60 days.

Dr Mahesh Kakade, Director of Board of Examinations & Evaluation of SPPU said, "We had given an option to students about the transcript certificate while filling the final exam form. It will be delivered at the time of results to those students who have opted for it."

Prof Sanjay Chakane said, " Earlier it used to take many days to receive the transcript certificate, but now students will not have to wait for this important document."
