Pune: An elderly couple was found dead at an apartment in Shivajinagar Gaothan area on Saturday evening. The incident came to light when one of their relatives came to visit them but found the door locked from inside and had to make a forced entry into the house.
The deceased couple has been identified as Sambhaji Bapu Shinde (75) and Shobha Sambhaji Shinde (70). Their dead bodies were found in a decomposed state and hence police believe that their death could have happened four to five days back. However, police said that the exact reason behind the death of the two could be ascertained only after the autopsy report is received. For now, Shivajinagar police have registered this case as an accidental death.
According to police, Shindes used to stay at the flat alone. They did not have children and nobody came to visit them. They used to come out of their home only for dumping any kitchen or dry waste into the container outside. So when the couple did not open their door for a week, nobody in the neighbourhood thought otherwise.
Relatives of Shinde used to visit their house once in a fortnight and were in contact over the phone. But in the last eight days, Shindes were not reachable over the phone. However, one of their relatives - daughter of Shobha Shinde's sister - came to visit the couple. She found the door closed from inside and waited for some time. When she got no response from Shindes, she alerted the neighbours who then broke open the door and gained entry into the flat. At that time, the couple was found dead inside the apartment. The neighbours then informed police about the incident.
When police searched the flat, they found some medicines lying around the dead bodies. Since the bodies had started decomposing, they were immediately sent for autopsy. Police could not ascertain the cause of death and are awaiting the autopsy report.
