Pune: Despite COVID-19 crisis, outstation students queue up for admissions in city-based educational institutes

Pune: The ongoing COVID-19 outbreak crisis has raised several questions over the future of higher education and institutes offering these courses, but going by a large number of applications received by Arts, Science and Commerce colleges, it is now clear that outstation students still prefer to study in Pune city.

According to some primary data shared by institutes, students from Kokan, Marathwada, Satara and Nagar have applied for admissions in large numbers. However, it remains to be seen how many of them take admission into these colleges. Several educational institutes in the city have opened up their online admission process through their websites and these links will be active for the next nine days.

Dr Ranjendra Zunjarrao, Principal of Modern College said, "Students are hopeful that a vaccine will be launched very soon and that is one reason behind the number of outstation students applying for admission to colleges in the city. We have received more than two thousand online admission applications so far and most of the students are from Latur, Kokan and Marathwada."

Prof M D Lawrence, Principal, Foresight College of Commerce said, "A lot of students from Kondhwa and Hadapsar area in the city and Baramati, Phaltan and Satara from outside Pune region are applying to our college. Most of these applications are for courses like BBA (IB), BBA (Computer Application) and B.Com.

Dr Dilip Sheth, Principal, S P College said, "There is a good response from students this year. We have received 1500 applications so far and still, there are many days available for students to apply for admission."

Prof P B Buchade, Principal, Garware College said, "After the Class 12 results were declared, we have started finalising the inhouse admissions for BSc and BA degree courses. The online admission process for outstation students will begin on July 24."

Prof Geeta Acharya, Principal, Garware Commerce College said that the online admission process for commerce degree course will be started soon.
