Pune: Cumulative water storage in four dams reaches 17 TMC, sufficient to quench thirst for entire year

Pune: Although rains in the catchment areas of four dams – Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar – have receded since Friday (August 7) the total water storage has crossed the 50 per cent mark which means that now Punekars don’t have to worry about their drinking water supply for the entire year. Pune city needs about 18 TMC water for a year and the total water storage in the four dams is now nearly 17 TMC.

Khadakwasla dam has filled to its 90 per cent capacity and the irrigation department has started 800 cusec water discharge in the spillway from Friday. The total water storage in Khadakwasla dam is now 1.76 TMC. The water storage in all four dams together was 16.41 TMC on Friday night which is about 56.30 per cent of its total capacity. Last year on this day all four dams were filled 100 per cent of their capacity

On Friday, Temghar region received 27 mm rainfall, Panshet received 14 mm rains, Varasgaon had 17 mm and Khadakwasla region received only 2 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. A total of 1.5 TMC water was added in the four dams in the last 24 hours.

Vaman Bhalerao, Sub Divisional Engineer, Khadakwasla said, “The water inflow in catchment areas has receded from Friday due to which the dam has not filled to its capacity. We expect moderate rainfall in the region which may help fill the dam on Saturday (August 8).”

If the last 36 hours’ rainfall figures are to be considered, then Temghar received five times rains as compared to Khadakwasla region. Only 18 mm rainfall was recorded in Khadakwasla region while Temghar received 107 mm rainfall in the last 36 hours. Varasgaon has received 79 mm and Panshet 77 mm rainfall in the last 36 hours.
