Pune: Consumer court orders Express Cargo Packers and Movers to pay compensation for damage to goods

Pune: The District Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum has ordered the 'Express Cargo Packers and Movers Company' to pay Rs 45,000 to a consumer as a part of the compensation for causing mental distress and the cost of filing a complaint, after the company refused to pay compensation for damage caused while transporting household goods from Chennai to Pune.

The Forum has ordered the company to pay Rs 45,000 to the complainant as a part of the compensation for causing mental distress and the cost of filing a complaint to Sohan Doshi, a resident of IT Park, who had filed a case against Pawan Chaudhary and Sunil Chaudhary belonging to Express Cargo Packers and Movers of Kolkata. The complaint was lodged with the Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum here through Advocate Swapnil Zade.

The household goods - including 36 items like scooter, music system, TV, microwave and clothes, etc - belonging to the complainant were to be transported from Chennai to Pune. For this, he visited the office of Express Cargo Packers and Movers.

He was told by the company employees that a list of items to be transported will be needed after which they can inform him about the total cost of transporting goods. The complainant was also told that three per cent of the total cost for transporting the goods was required to get insurance cover for the goods. Accordingly, the price of the package was Rs 38,810 and including the insurance amount, it went up to Rs 41,810.

The goods were then sent to Pune. However, the complainants noticed that the entire material that reached Pune was damaged. As a result, the complainant demanded compensation for the damage caused during the journey to the material.

However, a complaint was lodged with the Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum as the transport company did not heed to the consumers' request. Despite the notice, no one from the company appeared before the commission. Therefore, after the arguments were made by the complainant's counsel Zade, the Forum issued the orders for compensation.
