Pune: Completion of railways automatic signal work will take another 9 months

Pune: The automatic signalling system work on Pune-Lonavala railway track will take another nine months The railway officials claimed that work between Lonavala and Chinchwad has been completed till now and only the Chinchwad-Shivajinagar stretch is pending now. This work will resume by September 2020 and will be finished by March 2021, claimed railway officials.

The automatic signal system has helped railways to run their trains on schedule resulting in saving of commute time. The trains run on time as the automatic signal systems are installed at a distance of one kilometre apart. Trains do not have to wait for signals which subsequently has reduced travel time for passengers.

Reduction in travel time has also helped railways to increase the number of trains and their frequency on the same route. Presently, the frequency of trains on Pune-Lonavala route has been increased to 140 per cent.

Passengers have also expressed happiness over the efficiency of railways. K. Santosh, one such regular passenger on Pune-Lonavala route, says "Trains do not stop for signals on the route anymore. Earlier, we used to reach our destination late as trains used to stop everywhere for manual signals. The railways should complete the automatic signal system work on Chinchwad-Shivajinagar route before-schedule so that passengers will benefit from it."

Manoj Zanwar, Public Relations Officer for Central Railways, said "We have completed 48 km stretch of Lonavala to Chinchwad and installed an automatic signal system on this route. The remaining 15 km stretch between Chinchwad to Shivajinagar is pending, and we have put out a tender for the same. This work will start soon."
