Pune college, Pune police conduct research on suicide trends during COVID-19

Pune: Considering the critical situation that the city of Pune is undergoing during this coronavirus pandemic crisis, a Pune-based college along with Pune city police has observed that there has been a 13.5 per cent decline in people killing themselves due to financial constraints during the lockdown. The study claims that family support may help to fight suicidal tendencies.

The study was jointly conducted by the Pune-based Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackeray Women's University (SNDT) along with Pune police on various series of suicide taking place during COVID-19.

The research was conducted by Dr Madhavi Kulkarni (Vice Principal and Associate Professor of Commerce), Dr Manasee Rajhans (Head and Associate Professor of Psychology), Vasanti Joshi (Associate Professor of Commerce) along with the Crime Branch DCP Bachchan Singh. Mr Singh coordinated with the SNDT team for research along with Senior Inspector (PCB) Ajit Lakade, who provided necessary statistics for research.

The report mentions: "Overall there was a decline of 13.5% in suicides. From March to July, there were a total of 305 suicides in 2019 and around 264 in 2020. Majority of the suicides took place in the age group of 20-40 years-old."

This study was also undertaken to identify the reason behind the declined numbers. The research findings state: "Joint-families saw lesser suicides while nuclear families saw more suicides. In 2020, 72 per cent suicides took place in nuclear families, which means out of 125 cases, 90 cases were belonging to nuclear families."

The study finds the major reasons, which vary from loneliness, depression, financial penury, loss of a job, the relationship problems, etc. It's believed that the lockdown led people to live closely with their families, and hence, people moral support which helped to fight suicidal tendencies. The report states that more research needs to be done on the psychological aspects of the phenomenon.

Speaking to Sakal Times, the Pune city police's Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime branch) Bachchan Singh said, "One reason for the decline in suicides is the support of family due to lockdown, since family support may help to fight suicidal tendencies. Prima facie, proximity to the family members gives people moral support and helps to fight suicidal tendencies."
