Pune: Collective dam water storage in July 50 per cent below year-on-year basis

Pune: The cumulative water storage in four dams – Khadakwasla, Panshet, Temghar and Varasgaon – that supply water to the city is 50 per cent below the year-on-year basis for July month. This year the water stock is 9.87 TMC that is 33.86 per cent while it was 20.44 TMC that is 70 per cent in July 2019.

The Khadakwasla dam has 1.97 TMC total capacity, but the present stock is just 0.73 TMC which comes to around 37 per cent. The Panshet dam capacity is 10.65 TMC but at present it has only 4.30 TMC water storage which comes to around 40.42 per cent.

The Varasgaon dam total capacity is 12.82 TMC and presently has 4.11 TMC water stored in it which is just 32.04 per cent. The Temghar dam capacity is 3.71 TMC but has only 0.73 TMC water levels at present which is just 19.78 per cent. A fortnight ago, the cumulative water stock was 8.5 TMC – 29.39 per cent – of the total capacity.

Although, monsoon arrived in time this year, but there hasn’t been much activity in the catchment areas as well as Pune city and adjoining areas. Low rainfall in the catchment areas of the dams has resulted in very less rise in their water levels despite approaching the end of July month in this monsoon season. This increase of about 1 TMC water in the four dams together has provided Pune city a breather of one more month as far as the drinking water supply is concerned.

Pune Municipal Corporation gets 1400 MLD (Million Litres per Day) water every day. Due to the low water levels in Khadakwasla dam, some parts of the city like Katraj, Dhankawadi, Balaji Nagar and Sinhagad Road – are facing water supply cuts for the past month.
