Pune: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked two former officials of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) – a Scientist ‘F’ and Senior Technical Officer Group II – on charges of giving undue favours to a Mumbai-based private supplier of display boards for the SAFAR project.

CBI has also booked the Managing Director and Director of the private firm in the case. CBI has also conducted searches at the residential and official premises of the accused at Pune and Mumbai which led to recovery of incriminating documents/articles.

A case has registered under section 120-b (Punishment of criminal conspiracy), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the Indian Penal Code and section 13-2 (criminal misconduct by public servant) read with section 13-1-d (while holding office as a public servant, obtaining a pecuniary advantage for any person without any public interest) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Others including unknown public servants of IITM have also been booked along with the four accused on the allegations of causing loss to IITM.

It was alleged that during the period 2011-2018 the then public servants entered into conspiracy with others including Managing Director and Director of said Mumbai based private company and awarded the contract for the supply, commissioning and maintenance of ‘Digital Display System of SAFAR-PUNE’, including supply of 12 Outdoor True Colour LED Display Boards to Mumbai based private company in violation of the prescribed purchase procedure and rules and by way of disqualifying other bidders on flimsy grounds.

It was also alleged that the accused caused undue favour to the said private supplier by accepting substandard and below specifications cheap Digital Display Boards on exorbitant rates for SAFAR Project, Pune and thereby caused huge loss to IITM.
