Pune: Assistant police inspector, constable arrested for accepting Rs five lakh bribe

Pune: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths arrested an assistant police inspector and police constable on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from a 30-year-old accused who was chargesheeted by the Narayangaon police in a case filed earlier. The two cops took the bribe to file the charge-sheet as early as possible in the court and not arrest two other suspects in the case.

The cops who have been arrested were identified as Arjun Keshav Ghode Patil (38), currently posted as the Assistant Inspector and in-charge at the Narayangaon police station and Dharmatma Karbhari Hande (37), posted at the Narayangaon Centre of Special Branch, Pune District. They had demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from the complainant who is a 30-year-old man residing under the jurisdiction of the same police station.

The raid was conducted on instructions of Rajesh Bansode, Superintendent of Police, ACB, Pune Range and Sanjay Patil, Additional Superintendent of Police of ACB, Pune. Dattatray Bhapkar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sunil Bile, Police Inspector, Deepak Tilekar, Ratesh Tharkar, Saurabh Mahashabde, all police constables at the ACB in Pune unit conducted the raid.

According to information given by ACB, a case was registered against the complainant at the Narayangaon police station. Police had prepared a chargesheet in the case and the complainant was named in it. However, Narayangaon police had not filed the chargesheet in the court. The complainant wanted Narayangaon police to file it at the earliest in the court. Also, there were two other suspects in the case, whom the complainant wanted to be not named and arrested by the Narayangaon police.

Assistant Inspector Ghode Patil had on August 7 demanded the bribe amount of Rs 5 lakh for immediate filing of chargesheet in the court. Ghode Patil had asked Police Constable Hande to collect the bribe amount from the complainant. However, the complainant approached the ACB Pune unit and filed a complaint against Ghode Patil and Hande. Accordingly, ACB team laid a trap on August 11 and nabbed the duo while accepting the bribe at the Narayangaon police station itself.
