Pune: A fraudster posing as a private bank employee duped a reputed neurosurgeon to the tune of Rs 40 lakh under the pretext of approving a bank loan of Rs 8 crore. The incident came to light when the doctor approached Nigdi police and filed a complaint against the unidentified imposter.

Dr Amit Anant Wagh (36), a resident at Emirates Hills in Somatane Phata at Talegaon has complained about a person named Rohan Pawar (36) in this regard. Dr Wagh is a consultant working with Star Hospital in Akurdi.

Nigdi police have lodged an FIR against Rohan Pawar under section 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to the complainant, the incident happened from June 18 to July 27 after a person named Rohan Pawar had called him on his mobile number. Rohan told him that he worked with Standard Chartered Bank at the Kalyani Nagar branch and offered a loan of Rs 8 crore over the phone. Dr Wagh took an interest in the offer as he needed money to purchase ventilators and other equipment for his hospital.

Rohan collected the Know Your Customer (KYC) documents from Dr Wagh and later gave a forged loan sanction letter in the name of the bank amounting to Rs 8 crore. Rohan Pawar had demanded a commission of Rs 40 lakh for getting the loan sanctioned from the bank. Dr Wagh handed him over Rs 40 lakh in cash. Dr Wagh waited for a few days to get the loan amount disbursed in his bank account, but when it did not happen he realised he had been duped.

Investigation officer Police Sub-Inspector Mahendra Aher said, "We are verifying the name and credentials of the suspect Rohan Pawar."
