Pune airport selected for AI smart baggage screening trials

PUNE: The Pune airport is one of the eight airports across the country under the Airport Authority of India (AAI), which has been selected for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Powered Smart Baggage screening trials. The trial run started recently.

In their efforts to consistently provide better services and improve the infrastructure at airports in India, the AAI had organised the ‘Innovative for Airports’ programme under the Startup India Initiative. Under the programme, startsups across India got a chance to submit innovative solutions for airports.

“This initiative was aimed at boosting and recognising companies in the Indian start-up segment. Over 350 start-ups were screened across the country and eight were selected to implement their solution at various airports in India. Pune airport is one of them,” said Pune airport Director Ajay Kumar.

“One of these eight most innovative solutions, Baggage Artificial Intelligence is presently under trials at the Pune airport,” Kumar said.

It is an artificial intelligence-based solution developed to enhance the security at airports. Baggage AI is a first-of-its-kind threat detection system for security X-ray machines,” said Kumar. “This AI software technology can automatically detect various objects and other threats from the X-ray images during the screening of baggage and alert the operators,” explained Ajay Kumar.

This solution has been developed by Dimensionless Technologies, a startup of an IIT Alumni. Baggage AI can add another layer of security. It intends to provide valuable support for security operators in real-time. Moreover, it operates like a second pair of eyes that is consistent, never get fatigued and is always fully alert. A human can work with the Baggage AI to help make the right decisions.

Improving services
AAI has appointed a Japanese company, M/S Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India for improving services at airports. A two-day workshop was organised by the Pune airport on January 8 and 9. Pune airport Director Ajay Kumar inaugurated the workshop. During the workshop, officials of 12 airports were also present, including Vinit and Kunal from the appointed consultant.
