Pune airport to operate only for 12 hours from October; check new timings

Pune airport will operate for 12 hours (8 am to 8 pm) from October 26 due to repair work

Pune: Pune Airport from October 26 for the next one year will operate from 8 am to 8 pm. Pune Airport which is a defence airbase and is controlled by the Indian Air Force wants to repair and expansion the of the airstrip. Thus, from October the airport will operate for 12 hours a day. From the last two years, the discussion of airport repairing made rounds, finally now from October, the work will begin here.

There is only one runway at Lohegaon Airport. The maintenance and repair work will start on September 15 by the Air Force resulting in limited flights to and fro from Pune. The current length of the runway is 2,530 metres. The length of the runway after the repairing is expected to stretch to 2,133 metres.

The repairing of both runways will take place simultaneously. According to the officials, the airport may remain shut between April and May next years. There are currently 15 flights operating between 6 pm and 3 am. Night flights will be closed from 26 October.

The Air Traffic Analysis expert Dhairyashil Wandekar said, "The runway of Lohegaon Airport needs to be repaired because aircraft ferries have gone up in Pune from past few years. Also, the runway has not been repaired since 2013. However, there are major limitations to repairs at Lohegaon Airport. A city like Pune also needs a new airport and efforts should be made immediately for the same. The number of air passengers from Pune is increasing day by day. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on Purandar Airport.

Before the coronavirus imposed lockdown, there were about 170 daily flights from Pune airport. About 25,000 passengers ferried it every day. Currently, there are flights to eight cities with 25-30 flights in operations. Meanwhile, the Lohegaon airport administration has informed the airline carriers about the change. They have also started planning accordingly. The plan will be announced by the end of August, an airline spokesman said. Meanwhile, travellers from Pune can also prefer Mumbai Airport for travelling.
